This depends on the type of visa you’re applying for and which documents you have ready on hand. Some visa applications can be prepared within a day whereas others may take several days to prepare and submit if your documents are not ready. E.g. You will need your CV, education history, current visa details and visa history (if applying for a post-study Temporary Graduate visa, for PR, or for a new Student Visa), your English test results (e.g. IELTS, PTE, etc…) and other relevant documents and information. All documents will need to be certified or notarised as being original.
A new admission will depend on you submitting your relevant documents and whether or not you need a new student visa to go with it. For VET courses (such as Cert III, Cert IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma) admissions can be confirmed within 24 hours and may take up to a week. For Higher Education courses or degrees – admissions can be confirmed within 48 hours in some cases however most will take between 2-4 weeks, and sometimes longer in the case of Masters / PhD admissions.
IELTS is conducted in 2 different formats: General and Academic. To study in Australia you will need to sit the IELTS Academic test and achieve a sufficient band score.
You need to study for at least 2 academic years in Australia to fulfil the Australian Study Requirements and be eligible to receive points for fulfilling these requirements towards a further visa you may apply for. 2 academic years is equal to full time study completed in at least 16 calendar months, or at least 92 weeks, spread across 2 years (at least 46 weeks per year).
In most cases, students may work up to 40 hours per fortnight while their studies are in progress and unlimited hours during holidays. Those studying a Masters by Research degree or a PhD can work unlimited hours during their studies and during their holidays. Note: Students are currently permitted to work unlimited hours in all sectors of the economy due to the impacts of COVID-19 on the workforce. New students are also permitted to start working before their studies have commenced, which is not normally allowed. This policy will be reviewed by the government in April of 2022.
The timings for visa processing are solely dependent on the department and may be impacted due to events such as COVID-19. For example: Most student visas in the Higher Education Sector are processed within 10 days – 90 days, and may sometimes take up to 6 months or longer. Most post-study Temporary Graduate visas are processed within 4-10 months, and may take up to 12 months or longer.
A new admission when applying from outside Australia will generally take between 2-4 weeks provided all relevant documents are submitted. For admissions in Masters / PhD degrees – admissions may take several weeks to be confirmed by the university or institute.
Each institute and course has its own requirements. We recommend aiming to achieve at least 6 bands each with an overall band score of 6.0. Some degrees will require you to have a slightly higher score of 6.5 or 7.0. The better your band score, the better your chances at securing admission at a great institute or university in Australia.
